Match Report: Basketball Boys FINAL: HCI vs IJC
May 22nd, 2009 by CCA PRO
The guys’ basketball team dominated the court today as they clinched the championship title after a stimulating match against Innova JC. Leading by a huge margin, the team, which comprises of Jonathan Lian, Subhas, Nicholas Tan, Zhou Leong, Hong Yao, Hong Sheng, Chester Leow, Ee Ruey, Ching Poh, Hock Sing, and Edward Ng, epitomized the standards of the A Division in a rather one-sided affair.

The guys opened the match with vigour, demoralizing the defense of Innova with a flurry of goals, bringing the score to 8-2 within a few moments. Supporters watched the orange ball virtually warp around the court, owing to the quick pace of the game and the frequent possession interceptions. The guys acquired a steady approach, with excellent passes, and masterful individual efforts among them.

We saw the on-form Hong Yao bagging numerous lay ups. Innova’s #14 contributed much in field goals and displayed his creativity in manipulating the ball, but Hwachong’s defense was too difficult to penetrate. Other than fluent passing, the guys were ever-entertaining with their slick moves and occasional trickery that amazed both the Hwachong and Innova’s supporters. By the end of the 1st quarter, the score stood at 17-5, Hwachong in a respectable lead.

Innova returned in the 2nd quarter with a more offensive approach. Hwachong fought hard for the rebounds, constantly looking for opportunities to expand the lead. Zhou Kai, who played point guard, had superior agility and quick thinking. Though the score remained stagnant in the second quarter, the supporters were nevertheless entertained by the possession steals and intense scrambles for the ball under the basket.

Ching Poh (MVP of the match!) displayed excellent psycho-motor skills with his frequent successful conversions of rebounds into points. As for Innova, they were to be commended for always springing back into action even after trips and falls in the HC defense. The score was 27-13 by the end of the 2nd quarter.

Both teams were equally-matched in the 3rd quarter, as they scurried for possession of the ball. Subhas wowed the crowd with his impossibly swift reactions to the rebounds from his teammate’s free throws that left Innova rooted to their spots. Such reactions came in the form of flying leaps that culminated in successful mid-air rebounds.

His confidence definitely worked its wonders by boosting the morale of the team. As our players upped the tempo, a 20 point lead was churned out. Our spectators were further impressed and delighted by Hong Yao’s spectacular lay ups with his back to the basket. The score stood at 48-27 by the end of this quarter.

In the last quarter, Hwachong did not stop their offensive. Ee Ruey displayed great defense as he hounded his opponents for the ball mercilessly. There were instances of top-class teamwork as swift, laser-guided passes culminated in clinical finishes by Hong Yao, Ching Poh and Subhas. Innova, on the other hand, was in a mad, disorganized rush for points as they attempted to bridge the margin with desperate 3-pointers.

Our commanding lead over IJC gave us reason to count down from 10 seconds remaining. And naturally, victory was ours! There was never any doubt about the outcome once the match started. Final score 68-40, and Hwachong emerged as CHAMPIONS!

The Most Valuable Player went to Ching Poh, as his excellent control of the ball and expert shots boosted the team’s spirit and definitely played a part in propelling his team to victory. Well done!!!

Congratulations to the guys’ basketball team on winning the championship and for bringing pride and glory to Hwachong!!!
